The noir hero is a knight in blood caked armor. He’s dirty and he does his best to deny the fact that he’s a hero the whole time.
One of the things I like most about the character Batman, and I think a lot of people would agree, is the ability to take the hero to very dark and gritty places. Frank Miller and Christopher Nolan are two creators who took great advantage of this and each produced some of the most notable work with the character.
The bat cowl and bat symbol are both so iconic at this point, that even at their most basic they can evoke all of the legend, lore and love of the character at just a glance. With this image, I wanted to play with that and very simply work off the crisp graphic nature of the Batman shapes and also throw in chaos, grit, splatters and drips. Even amidst turmoil, just a few elements are needed for Batman to boldly emerge.
