I’ve always spent more time with a smile on my face than not, but the thing is, I don’t write about it.
Robert Smith is such a fantastic character in the world pulp culture. So distinctive in his personal style and songwriting, he’s been the frontman of one of the world’s most well-known goth rock bands since 1976. Once called “pop culture’s unkempt poster child of doom and gloom” I wanted to capture more than just a likeness with this portrait. Although he has a recognizable face, I wanted to play off of his most stereotypical attributes: his teased and out of control hair and his smudged, bright red lipstick.
I started with a large messy ink and charcoal drawing. Once the general feeling and large shapes were established, I digitized the drawing and finished it in Photoshop.
His hair is wild; overtaking the top of the picture and his bright red lipstick is the only element of color. In the background dance tiny cartoon skulls.
